John Lee specializes in gastronomic still life, portraiture and reportage.
John's roots are in photojournalism and studio work. He spent ten years as a staff photographer for the Chicago Tribune — covering presidential campaigns, the rise of China, civil unrest in Haiti, Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan and Indonesia, and the war in Iraq. While at the Tribune, John honed his expertise in portraiture and feature photography, and was one of the primary photographers for the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine.
John left the Tribune in 2005 to pursue culinary photography and portraiture in his hometown of San Francisco. Since then, he has shot numerous cookbooks with celebrity chefs and personalities such as Guy Fieri, Tyler Florence, Richard Blais, and Sunny Anderson. John has worked closely with the Hidden Valley Ranch brand on shooting their entire archive of more than 400 recipes. He is also the principal photographer for the Sprout Baby Food company, shooting all the photography for their entire line of products.
Additional clients include Apple Inc., Chronicle Books, Clarkson Potter, Constellation Brands, Discovery Channel, Food Network, The Guardian Weekend Magazine, House Beautiful Magazine, Men's Journal, MillerCoors, The Sunday Times Magazine, Sunset Magazine, Ten Speed Press, Time Magazine, Torani, and Weldon Owen.
John is co-author of "Lavash: An Armenian Cookbook," with Kate Leahy and Ara Zada. The cookbook is being published by Chronicle Books, to be released in Fall 2019.
